It's time for the Bluebonnet Shop Hop block challenge and we have the fabric kits ready for you to make an incredible block The entries will be judged by the participating shops and then displayed during the shop hop. Sue Phillips outdid herself with this poinsettia quilt. The pattern is from Quilt Country and I think we need it in our store!

Here is a close up of the center flower with the veins added to the petals. Wow - the white and red were just breathtaking!!!!

In my quest to make 4 easy (4 hours to piece) kind of quilts - I thought of Thimbleberries. I did this pattern - which I love - but what was I thinking? Four hours with all of those half square triangles? Sigh. So failed on the time - but LOVE LOVE LOVE Mr. Green's quilt!

Four Hour Quilt #2

Once again - big hunks of beautiful fabric work to make a great quilt. This is based off of Deanne Quill's Boxtrot pattern. I had cut the fabric at home and put it together at work without the pattern so it is mostly like the pattern, but not quite! This quilt is my favorite. I just love the burnt orange and charcoal grays.

Four Hour Quilt #1

The Westwood High School band has new uniforms this year. They are great with charcoal grays and burnt oranges. I love the color combination and was inspired to make a quilt. That morphed into making 4 quilts - one for each band director. And if I am going to do four - they needed to be VERY EASY and QUICK!!! So here is the first one for Ms. Santa Cruz who is my son's percussion teacher. Took about 4 hours to make the top! YES!!! The pattern is Deanne Quill's "Come Fly With Me". I love making this quilt. It has become my new Yellow-Brick-Road kind of quilt.

Bob's "Damn" Quilt

This is Bob Humphries original design for his best friend. They hunt together - the quilt is called "Damn".

Notice that the hunter is in the river taking care of things that need to be taken care of, and the ducks are flying overhead and the gun is in the duck blind.

Here is a close up of the duck blind that is made of threads. Love it! Sorry that I did not take a picture of the quilting - it was ducks around the border, cat tails in the blocks and different free motion techniques give the center great texture.

New Block of the Month

We are starting a new block of the month called "The Generals' Wives". It is a big quilt - 104" square. It runs for 12 months at $24.95 per month. Each quarter you will get some of the setting blocks to do as well. There is a story about 5 Confederate Generals' Wives and one Colonel's Wife, and 6 Union Generals' Wives. The quilt was designed by Quilters Quarters. The fabric is from Wyndham. It was pretty easy to put together and we are loving having it hanging in the store!

Fly Fishing in Colorado

My son, Scott, and I went to Estes Park, Colorado, last weekend. We learned to fly fish and are hooked - get it? We can't wait to go again!

Ok - I realize it is barely bigger than a guppy - but here is the first catch of the day! It was really quilt a thrill. Took my picture and let the little guy go - hopefully a wiser fish. :)

My family went to Kobe Steakhouse last night. Salvadore was our chef and we had so much fun. He was the best chef we've had there - great fun with his tricks, humor, interactions with our kids and the food was sooooo goood!

We bought an HP laptop for our son's birthday. The hard drive went out, while still under warrenty. We still had to pay $78 to fix it with Geek Squad. Hummmm... Anyhow it started to blue screen again. I took it back and they said it was not the drive this time, but a virus. And it would cost over $200 to fix. I ended up taking it to Eric the Computer Guy, who fixed it for $75. And what was wrong? The disk drive was not connected correctly. There were some minor viruses that Eric cleaned up. And he installed some new anti-virus software and generally cleaned things up. He has fixed two of our computer problems and we are happy campers. His number is 512.789.2894.

The first project is the table runner. It takes 1 charm pack, 1 yard of fabric (used for border and backing) and 1 Honey Bee Tumbler Template.

This is one of four placemats. It takes 2 charm packs, 1 yard of 2 fabrics, and the Honey Bee Tumbler Template. One yard is used for backing and binding, and the other for the napkins and napkin rings. Other notions are the Oval Quick Yo Yo Maker and the Flower Yo Yo Maker.

The quilt uses three charm packs, 1/2 yard for the inner border and 1 1/2 yards of outer border fabric, and, of course, the Honey Bee Tumbler Template!

Blocks For Linus

Honey Bee proudly supports local charity The Linus Connection. Earlier in the year, we challenged our customers to make 12" blocks for Linus using a fun striped fabric. All blocks were then donated to Linus and turned into quilts by their volunteers for children in crisis in Central Texas.

Thank you to all of our customers that participated! Your efforts are greatly appreciated and the blocks that came in all made fantastic fun quilts for kids.

I stopped by Vali & Kim's in Dripping Springs and was inspired by a recovered chair that they had in their store. I used the Jo Morton laminated fabric from Andover to quickly recover my yucko outdoor furniture. Then I had to paint it red and I love the way it turned out. Now, they did the piping and a terrific job. I did used the kind-of-put-together-in-an-afternoon method, but it still looks ssoooooo much better than it did!

Here you can see my shade garden trying to grow - I am having a heck of a time wtih a certain psycho dog killing my plants because he can't seem to wait to releive himself until he gets out in the yard. Anyone have any ideas about dog-resistant plants? The girl at Home Depot suggested that I put moth balls around the base of the plants that are appealing to him, but then my back yard would smell like moth balls......

Dream Bakery's Newest Cookie

We love Dream Bakery - www.dreambakery.com. It is about a block away from Honey Bee on Anderson Mill Rd. Azar has outdone herself with her new French macaroons, pictured here with another Christie Ferguson favorite the coconut macaroon - they are so good! My family now believes that we should have a macaroon a day.

They are a great place to hang out if you are attending 5 @ The Hive then need a place to hang until Thimbleberries. So when you are coming to see us I urge you to stop by her bakery and try one of these delicious goodies!

This is Scott's favorite - the pistachio. Christie loves the vanilla, Greg the chocolate and Kayleigh and I love them all.

All of us at Honey Bee wish all of you a Happy New Year! Here are some Christmas memories to share - it was a good holiday season!

Merry Christmas from Dahlonega, Ga. My kids in Santa's sleigh on the square in downtown Dahlonega. We were visiting my husband's family before Christmas in Dawsonville, GA.

Misty, our crazy cat "helping" us decorate the tree.

And here she is napping on my snowman pillow - she has taken it over and is going to be very sad when the Valentine's pillow comes out - its much smaller.

And here is my new great nephew who visited from California. This is Maryann's first grandson, Michael Bailey. Look at those eyes! Super sweet baby and we miss him already!

Wonderful Setting for 5 @ The Hive 2010

Gayle Blair brought her quilt top by that she made with the 2010 5 @ the Hive blocks. It is so beautiful. She did need to make 1 more block - so had 25 total.

Decorating Your Tree with Fabric

Our wonderful Debbie Balagia came up with the cutest ideas for decorating your Christmas tree with fabric. These clear bulbs were on sale at Hobby Lobby for $2.99 for 12. She stuffed them with things she had around her sewing room - scraps of fabric, a charm from a charm pack, rick rack, ribbons, etc. The bows are made out of batik scraps.

Now for the fabric chain. Debbie used a jellly roll, but you can use scraps as well. She folded the 2 1/2 inch strip in thirds and sewed it down. Then she cut the strip into six 6 1/2 inch strips. So you could use any 2 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch pieces. Fold in thirds lenghtwise and sew down the fold. Debbie glued the ends together to make the link for the chain, but you could use velcro and use the chain as an advent chain.

Our Robert Kaufman rep was by and we ordered the Grinch line for Christmas next year - sight unseen! Here is a small picture of what is to come - so cute! They do such a good job on the artwork for the Dr. Suess fabric - the images look just like the books.

Here is the sweetest little pumpkin - my new great neice - Emma Jean Miller! My sister and I babysat and it went very well. It has been a very long time since I changed a wiggly 2 week old.

Here I am with my favorite authors - Alma Allen and Barb Adams of Blackbird Designs.

This light fixture was in Barb and Alma's booth. Somehow I need to figure out how to adapt a version of that for my Thanksgiving table. I'll keep you posted. My parents replaced some fencing and I am thinking that old fencing will be involved....the wheels are turning....

Here I am with my favorite fabric designer - Joanna Figueroa from Fig Tree & Co. I want to live in this booth.

Well...its football season again and we have been attending the Westwood High School games to watch our son, Scott, who is a freshman in the band (percussion - plays in the pit).

Last week I worked on the visitor's side concession stand when we played McNeil High School. It was great fun. McNeil has the nicest fans. Well, here come 3 or 4 Round Rock High School players (maybe former players?) wearing their letter jackets. I told them how I went to Round Rock High and that I graduated in 1977. They were so funny - one said he figured he'd be about minus 23 when I graduated. I am still laughing about our conversation. They were so cute and funny. And impossibly young.

Susan Cranshaw came and taught a class this weekend at Honey Bee. She and her assistant are absolutely wonderful teachers! Everyone enjoyed the class. The next class is in November and is full, but we are going to have her come back in February. We will firm up the date and announce it at the December Open House. (I still want to do the armadillo!)

The "New" Machine

I had the opportunity to purchase this little Featherweight for Kayleigh and she loves it! Here is her first experience sewing with it - after we figured it out. Actually had to read the manual. Sigh.

I love the look of concentration on her sweet face.

Some are so cute - some maybe not so cute - but it was a fun read. Kayleigh and I are inspired to play with some old dresses in my closet.

Friendship Triangle Exchange - Christmas Fabrics

Join us for another fun-filled triangle exchange with fellow quilters! The exchange will consist of 4 inch (finished) half-square triangles made from Christmas Fabrics. Honey Bee will collect your triangles and return the same number of units that you turned in.

The rules:

Must use a paper pieced triangle method, so all triangles are the exact size of 4 inch finished (4 1/2 inch unfinished).
Have a light and a dark fabric of good quality 100% cotton for contrast in your triangles.
Sew the triangles using a neutral cotton thread.
Cut the triangles apart, but do not remove the paper, the recepient will do the pressing and removing of paper.
Make as many half-square triangles as you like, but no more than 36 of the same two fabrics. Please group matching fabrics triangles together.
Place your triangles in a Ziploc back with your name and phone number.
Turn in the triangles at Honey Bee anytime before September 20, 2010.

Come pick up your triangles on or after September 25, 2010 at 9 a.m. and bring Show And Tell from previous Friendship Triangle Exchanges!

I took a class at Marmalade Skies tonight called Pinot Picasso. Here is my painting. It was so much fun. I think I may do it again. Everyone's painting was of dandelions, but they were all so different. Reminded me of quilts from the same pattern.

Marmalade Skies is a great little creative business - decopage, mosaic, painting - my kids took a tye-dye camp. Check them out!

A Visit to Woodrose Winery

My husband is friends with Mike Guilette who owns the Woodrose Winery in Stonewall. We went there on Saturday night for a evening on wine tasting and fireworks. It was the perfect night - 79 degress with a light breeze. The setting was beautiful, the wine delicious and the firework show was fantastic! It is well worth the drive for a visit!

Its got me thinking of winery quilt shows...winery retreats....hummm.....

Quilts Delivered to Camp Braveheart

Anne Ellison from the Linus Connection and I went to Austin Hospice today to deliver the quilts for Camp Braveheart. Here they are being received by Doran Oatman from Austin Hospice, and Nahal DelPassand who is the coordinator of Camp Braveheat. They were thrilled with the quilts and want to pass their appreciation on to their creators! Linus Connection delivered 100 quilts, 36 of which were assembled using the challenge blocks from the Bluebonnet Patchwork Trail Shop Hop.

We heard from a customer that moved to the Dallas area. She finished and entered her red, white and blue 5@the Hive and it won 1st place in the Irving Quilt Guild show in Artisan Bed Quilts!!!! Trish told Sue, "Your design was spectacular!! The judges just loved it!"!!! The quilts were quilted by Shelley Hilton-Pace (from Weatherford. Congratulations to Trish and Shelley (and Sue!). She also entered a quit that she completed from a kit that Osie put together and it won 2nd place!

Hot off the presses - I made this quilt for my daughter's debate teacher's wedding! Best wishes to Jeremy and January! I used Asian fabrics and fabrics from Indian saris, as well as Hoffman batiks. There is a Texas batik on the back bringing it all together.

Cut the triangles apart, but do not remove the paper, the recepient will do the pressing and removing of paper.
Make as many half-square triangles as you like, but no more than 52 of the same two fabrics. Please group matching fabrics triangles together.
Place your triangles in a Ziploc back with your name and phone number.
Turn in the triangles at Honey Bee anytime before April 19, 2010

Honey Bee will have "Honey Sticks" available for purchase. Each stick consists of a light fabric, a dark fabric, and half-square triangle paper. Each stick makes 28 half-square triangle units.

The kick off party is April 24, 2010 at 9 am. You will get back your triangles and see the results of our instore challenge.
